The pleasantness of the place and the charm of the landscape propitiated the great loves of the past, such as the one between the daring lovers Francesca and Paolo Malatesta (1289), narrated by Dante in the Fifth Canto of Hell, the memory of which is still present in the rooms of the fortress of Gradara.

a wonderful village rich in history

The building in which we are privileged to find ourselves is located right inside the medieval village of Gradara. Embraced by its walls and a double system of defensive walls and drawbridges (one of which is still in place), the Rocca is the heart of this place, with its chivalrous and romantic soul.
The Malatesta family, seduced by the beauty of the panorama and the salubriousness of the air, turned it into their summer residence, refining the fortress functions desired by the ancient Grifo family, who founded it around the year 1000.

Besides the two lovers of the Divine Comedy, the fortress was also home to Lucrezia Borgia as a teenager, at her first bitter wedding to Giovanni Sforza, lord of Pesaro, successor to the Malatesta family in the lordship of Gradara in 1463. After a very brief regency of Cesare Borgia, Lucrezia's brother, Gradara came under the rule of Francesco Maria della Rovere, nephew of Pope Julius II.
With the extinction of the Della Rovere family, the castle was granted to a few noblemen from Pesaro and then ended up in the hands of the Municipality of Gradara, which, unable to provide for its preservation, ceded it with the obligation of restoration to the Counts Morandi-Bonacossi, who give their name to the palace in which we have built our relais.
